Yoga for businesses

From work stress to work satisfaction
Our work culture demands more and more from employees. It is focused on performance, working faster and more efficiently. The National Survey on Working Conditions (NEA) 2021 shows that the percentage of employees experiencing burnout complaints (mental fatigue due to work) has risen to 17%. In 2021, 9% of the survey respondents reported experiencing a work-life imbalance.
The absenteeism rate was reported as being 4.9%, with almost 37% of employees indicating work pressure and work stress as the main causes thereof. Every year, employees miss 11 million workdays due to work stress, costing employers up to 2.8 billion euros.
As we know, prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure. Dozens of studies have proven that yoga, meditation and mindfulness have a positive effect on general health, mental resistance and emotional balance. Harvard University calls yoga “weightlifting for the brain”. When you lift weights, your muscles get larger and stronger. When you regularly practice yoga, your brain cells develop new connections and changes occur in the brain structure and function, resulting in improved cognitive skills, such as learning and memory.
Positive effects of yoga on the brain
MRI scans show that people who practice yoga have a thicker cerebral cortex (the area of the brain responsible for information processing) and hippocampus (the area of the brain involved in learning and memory) compared to non-practitioners. These brain regions tend to shrink as you age, but older yoga practitioners show less shrinkage than those who didn’t practice yoga. This suggests that yoga may counteract age-related decline in memory and other cognitive abilities.
Research from Harvard Health also shows that yoga and meditation can improve executive functions such as reasoning, decision making, memory, learning, reaction time and accuracy on tests of mental acuity.

Positive effects of yoga on emotional balance
All exercise can boost your mood by lowering levels of stress hormones, increasing the production of endorphins and bringing more oxygenated blood to your brain. But yoga can have even more benefits. It may affect mood by increasing levels of a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is associated with improved mood and reduced anxiety.
Meditation also balances the limbic system – the part of the brain that deals with emotions. As your emotional reactivity decreases, you react more tempered when faced with stressful situations.
Positive effects of yoga on the body
Researchers found that people who practiced yoga for at least 30 minutes a week for at least four years gained less weight during middle adulthood. Overweight people have actually lost weight. Overall, those who practiced yoga had a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) – the internationally used measure that shows whether you have a healthy weight in relation to your height – compared to those who did not practice yoga.
Practicing yoga a few times a week increases muscle strength and flexibility, increases stamina and improves the function of your heart, lungs and blood vessels. Yoga is now being incorporated into many cardiac rehabilitation programs for its cardiovascular and stress-relieving benefits.
The research published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine concludes that yoga is a useful way to boost the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body.
